Chapter Eleven

Monday morning came bright and early. I’d set my alarm even earlier than normal, heading out for a run around campus before Graham’s show began. By the time his voice graced the airwaves I was back in my cottage with a cup of coffee in my hand.

Between the thought of dinner with Graham, Krav Maga class tonight, and my first day of classes in a few hours I was a bundle of nerves. Maybe the caffeine surge wasn’t such a great idea I thought, as I began to get ready to head out for the day. I was literally bouncing off the walls.

Pausing at the door to my cottage, I took a deep breath and grabbed my bag for the walk across campus to the English department. I smiled at the students as I made my way through the building and up the stairs to my office. I still had an hour before my first class and I wanted to take a moment to get organized.

Dean Wilshere was already hard at work in her office when I arrived. I knew she only taught two classes these days, and not until afternoons, so I tried not to disturb her. However, I’d barely settled into my chair when her kind face peeked around the doorframe into my office.

“Good morning, Professor Crockett,” she said with a smile, adopting a more formal greeting with the students buzzing about the building.

“Good morning, Dean Wilshere,” I said, returning her smile. “How was your weekend?”

“Splendid, my dear,” she replied, settling into the chair on the other side of my desk. “I saw you out for a run this morning as I came into the building.”

It was more of an observation than a question, but she seemed to be waiting for a response. I thought a moment, debating how much to share. I’d already come to trust this kind lady and her motherly air, so I dove head first into the conversation.

“Yes,” I said with a sigh. “I’ve started both some self-defense and martial arts classes at night in Newcastle,” I admitted. “They’ve kept me a bit stiff and sore so I thought perhaps running would help get me in better shape.”

“Well, that sounds exciting,” she said, leaning forward with keen interest. “I love to see young ladies taking charge like that. We can’t always depend on a man, can we?”

“No, ma’am. That’s for sure,” I laughed, shaking my head.

Her sweet laughter joined mine, filling my office. She stood as she looked at her watch, a smile on her face.

“I should let you get to your first class. Enjoy your first day of teaching. I’ll be here if you need me,” she said, disappearing back into her office next door.

I gathered up my syllabi and my class lists, making my way down the stairs. Several students had already found seats in the small classroom. I only had twenty or thirty students in each class and they were all upperclassmen and mostly English Literature majors. Still, I wasn’t sure what to expect as an American from these English students.
